Mother's Day at The Flower Dispensary Geelong

This Sunday is a very special day for mothers all over the world.  Use this day to remember the wonderful things our mother's have done in our lives.

At The Flower Dispensary, we have plenty of treats to spoil your mum and remind her of how wonderful she is.  Obviously flowers are our specialty, and we have a divine assortment of blooms that will thrill any recipient.  But that's not all.  We also have a large range of classic and bespoke cards and stationary, candles to illuminate the day, and soaps, jewellery, perfume and books. 

Don't forget to pre-order your flowers by Wednesday 8th May.  If you haven't don't worry though!  We are open this Saturday 11th May from 10 to 4, and on Sunday 12th, from 8.30 to 12 midday.

Autumn Floral Arrangements

The days are getting shorter and there is a chill in the air. The golden days of autumn are upon us, signaling a new direction in home décor and entertaining.  We seem to breathe a collective sigh of relief when the new season rolls around.  There’s a welcomed reprieve from the hot summer days, and there are the delicious aromas of hearty, cool-weather food pouring out of the oven.   It’s nearly Easter too, which means holidays, food, family and friends!

Celebrating with a long lunch is one of the most delightful ways to welcome in the cooler days and enjoy Easter.  A table set with love and thought is always admired and appreciated.  At the Flower Dispensary we take pride in creating floral arrangements that are unique and elegant, and always to suit our customer.   Think of the glorious deep red and orange hues of autumn and imagine them bringing colour and beauty to your room.

Love and flowers...

After the festive Season and Summer holidays are over and school students are back at school and workers fully returning to work, Valentines Day is suddenly upon us so that our thoughts are quickly turning to the vibrant hues of reds and pinks that usually typify the day of the Valentine. 

Whilst couples are planning romantic gifts, dinner dates or special surprises for their loved one (or potential loved one!) we are gleefully preparing beautiful bouquets that thoughtful 'beaus' have chosen for their floral surprise.  It is always a privelege to design a floral arrangement that will ultimately delight its recipient, and especially on Valentines Day!  This year was no exception.  We not only made up some stunning Valentines flower arrangements, but also offered some very sweet gifts as an alternative to flowers.  This meant that the ladies weren't the only ones to receive something heart-shaped.  We were also delighted to see how many customers used the day to tell their friends how much the cared or loved them - such a nice thought!

How to care for cut flowers in the heat

Many cut flowers that we love to enjoy in our home or office don't like the heat, especially when it is very humid.  Unless you have your home or workplace fully air-conditioned, follow these simple steps to make sure you get the maximum life expectancy out of your cut flowers when it is hot: 
• Try and keep your flowers in a cooler place and out of humid places and direct sunlight for a long period of time. If you going out for the day move the flowers to the coolest spot and then put them back in place for you to enjoy when you get back home. 
• Change and replace the vase water regularly with cool fresh water and recut the stems.
• Use a preservative in the water.
• Remove any wilted or dead petals or foliage.
• Remove any foliage that is below water level as bacteria can form over time and affect the life span of your flowers.

These tips should help extend the life of your cut flowers.  We of course love the warm weather and we certainly work hard in our Geelong flower shop to keep all of our flowers as fresh as possible, even when the weather seems almost too hot to bear!

Goodbye 2012...hello Summer break

As we approach the final weeks of December, amongst the fun and chaos that the festive season brings, it is important to try to reflect on the year that has been.  Whilst very quick, it has been fabulous.  We have so many wonderful, regular shoppers who enjoy our fresh market flowers and our range of gifts and homewares.  We have loved supplying bouquets and arrangements for many different functions in Geelong and occasions including some gorgeous weddings and we've enjoyed welcoming new visitors from near and afar.  We can only wish for an even bigger and better year in 2013.

The Flower Dispensary will close for a much needed rest over the month of January 2013 (we officially close for trade at 2pm on Monday 24 December 2012 and will re-open at 9am on Tuesday 29 January 2013)   We look forward to spending time with our families and friends and re-charging the batteries.  Enquiries can still be sent to us using our email enquiry form on our website – we will respond to them on our return.

Pretty spring wedding

We recently had the pleasure of creating the flowers for a wedding at Werribee Mansion.  Lapel buttonholes, a flowergirl headlet, ladies corsages, bridesmaids and bride bouquets and table arrangements were all made with mixtures of jasmine, succulents, sweet pea, helebores, ranunculus, lily of the valley and dusty miller.  These flowers provided the faintest hints of pinks, creams and pale greens to create the loveliest soft and feminine bouquets - just stunning!

Weddings are such a special and happy time and flowers can be used so well to reflect the bride, the couple, the event and the style - whatever you want them to be.  Our Geelong florist team loves working with brides and creating wedding flowers to help bring their special day to life.

L'ASCARI

The Design Files 

What a month it has been for us...despite the everlasting chill, our florist shop has stayed bright, beautiful and busy with blooms, products and customers that we love to deal with every day.  As well as all this, and as we contemplate our first birthday in business, we were absolutely delighted to be featured in The Design Files blog earlier this month, via our friends Laura and Penny at Oh! Hello Geelong who really have done such an extraordinary job in not only finding, but supporting some really wonderful and diverse businesses in Geelong.  

The Flower Dispensary in Hobart 

The chill of the Winter did little to dampen our spirits on a recent trip to beautiful Hobart, where we spent most of our time enjoying and exploring the delights of Salamanca. 

Strolling through parks in the sunshine, admiring Mount Wellington (which we later climbed!), discovering shops that inspire us for our Geelong flower shop and savouring sites that the Hobart waterfront has to offer, was truly wonderful.   Stunning selections of blooms instantly caught our eye daily and we loved the Southern Harvest seeds we found, packets of which we gave to the girls on our return for looking after our flower shop Geelong.   We especially enjoyed the maker, a store with gorgeous artisan clothing, jewellery and artworks; it became an instant and firm favourite, and we look forward to returning to visit soon.

Winter Flowers Colour the Cold

Winter is the time of year we rug up, keep warm, perhaps hibernate a little, maybe take a walk in the crisp, clear air, have a pot of soup on the ready and either wait it out until Spring arrives or enjoy the challenges of the cold. Whichever way you approach this season winter brings with it some beautiful flowers that can only brighten the gloomiest of days.

A recent brisk early morning trip to the flower market saw our shop scented and coloured with an array of beautiful Alliums, Hydrangeas, Peonies, Tulips and Cymbid Orchids - what a gorgeous way to enjoy this time of year. We are so lucky to have Peonies straight from Holland - these delicate flowers bloom in Australia later in the year so it is wonderful to have a taste of what is soon to come.

So while we may be approaching the depths of winter, there are so many varieties of flowers we can enjoy - traditional winter bulbs, imported flowers and all the colour, fragrance and cheer that comes with them. Enjoy our Geelong flowers this winter.
